SIMSA Carbon Calculator Unveiling and Usage Workshop

SIMSA is excited to announce that the Carbon Calculator (GHG Calculator) has been completed by KPMG and is ready to be used by SIMSA members. The goal of this calculator is to provide SIMSA members with a baseline GHG inventory, to be able to respond to customer requests for this data. To ensure that the data and calculations contained within the calculator would be relevant to customers, it was developed in consultation with several customers of SIMSA member clients (Nutrien, TC Energy, BHP & Cameco).


To unveil and then see you efficiently use the calculator, KPMG and SIMSA will be hosting a 2 hour workshop on June 23 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm via Teams. The goal of this session will be to educate and train SIMSA members on how to use the calculator, as well as assist members in entering their 2020 data into the calculator. At the end of the session you will have your 2020 carbon footprint number, for Scopes 1 and 2, but not 3. Scope 3 is the carbon created by the use of your products and was not required by the producing companies we consulted.


This is a SIMSA members only event!


In order to be able to complete your 2020 GHG inventory during this training session, please bring the following relevant 2020 data to this virtual meeting:

  1. All electricity invoices (the annual total for each location is required)
  2. All invoices for fuel used in stationary combustion (natural gas, propane, etc.) (the annual total for each location is required)
  3. All invoices for fuel used in mobile combustion (diesel used for fleet or equipment, gasoline used for company vehicles, etc.) (the annual total used)
  4. Any information you have regarding refrigerant use e.g. refilling of AC equipment (if you have this information)


Note: 

  • The calculator allows for the calculation to be done for up to 10 locations and then combined into one final number. So, this could be done by different buildings/street addresses and/or segments within a building (if you have that kind of data).
  • The day prior to the event, we will send out the calculator – an Excel spreadsheet – and the manual. Then for the event itself, bring your various usage totals from the year, plug them in, and then leave the event with your carbon footprint from 2020.  If you do not have everything handy for the event – that’s OK. You can add them later and the event will just be a tutorial for you.
